Keith and Dufftown Railway

Keith and Dufftown Railway

The Keith and Dufftown Railway or The Whisky Line is a heritage railway in Scotland, running for 11 miles from Dufftown railway station (Ordnance Survey grid reference NJ322414) to Keith Town (NJ429508) via Drummuir (NJ378442). Originally part of the former Great North of Scotland Railway line which linked Aberdeen with Elgin, the line was latterly a freight-only branch for British Rail, truncated at Dufftown. The line, which was reopened by volunteers during 2000 and 2001, passes through some of Scotland's most picturesque scenery, with forest and farmland, lochs and glens, castles and distilleries.

All passenger services are provided by B.R. Derby Class 108 DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) 'Spirit of Speyside' which can seat 117 passengers. The area's abundant wildlife can be glimpsed from the train, including deer, foxes, buzzards, heron, and much more. Scheduled passenger services run at weekends from Easter to September and take approximately 38 minutes for the 11 mile journey. Passengers can join and alight at any of the three stations. Private hire of the train is available during the week for most of the year.

The KDRA provide a versatile range of catering services. Sit down and enjoy a hot snack, tea and coffee in the 'Buffer Stop'. Located on the platform at Dufftown, our combined Kitchen Car and Cafeteria Car go to make up the 'Buffer Stop', serving delicious hot and cold snacks, drinks and larger meals, and open most weekends during the operating season. All fresh food is prepared by our friendly staff in the Kitchen, and you can enjoy it in the comfort of the cafe car.

The Keith and Dufftown is entirely volunteer operated, so if you have some free time and are looking for something different to do why not join us?
